Write Without Fear, Edit Without Mercy

I have a simple writing and editing philosophy: Write without fear… edit without mercy.

When I write I allow myself the freedom to get the words down on the page unfettered and unburdened by issues of grammar or syntax. The objective is to create freely.

It is then the role of the editor to refine the composition and language so that the words are arranged in perfect symphony. Useless words or fussy punctuation can blur the meaning and intent, and so extreme prudence is required.

In short, it is editors that shape and hone the manuscript to elevate the writer from language creator to language expert!

They substitute high-brow prose for simple notes, change passive voice to active, watch out for verb-subject disagreements, provide missing articles, words or punctuation, cut the clutter and above all polish the style.

I liken the process to that of a sculptor. The writer, like the sculptor, scopes out the subject of the work, decides upon the material and the outline shape of the project – and embarks on the process of detailing until the result approaches something close to the end product. The editor then steps in and provides the fine detail that gives the project its enduring polish and flair. This is particularly the case in non-fiction writing and editing – where the author may be highly knowledgeable and skilled in the topic, but might not have the chops to communicate that knowledge on the page.

The symbiotic relationship between fearless writing and merciless editing is what elevates ordinary writing to extraordinary levels. By allowing oneself to write without fear, one unlocks the power of the imagination. And by editing without mercy, that raw potential is refined and shaped into something remarkable.

So, as you embark on your writing journey, remember the mantra: "Write without fear, edit without mercy." Embrace the freedom of uninhibited expression in your first draft, and then channel your inner critic (or, better still, ask a professional editor!) to transform your work into a masterpiece. With this approach, you will unleash the true power of your words and create writing that resonates with readers most profoundly.
